At the business networking meeting held on March 22, 2024 at Carlton Hotel Bangkok Sukhumvit (co-sponsored by Tokyo Metropolitan Industrial Technology Research Center, Saitama Prefecture Thailand Support Desk, and Tokyo Metropolitan Small and Medium Enterprise Development Corporation), Green and Blue Planet Solutions (GBP) presented about the latest trends in decarbonization as a guest speaker. Mr. Kenichi Umeyama, Managing Director of GBP provided a seminar regarding International Renewable Energy Certificate (I-REC) and EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) to the participants from Japanese industries in Thailand. Additionally, GBP provided a 1MWh of renewable energy certificate (I-REC) derived from the oldest solar power plant in Thailand in order to use green electricity at this meeting,. In addition, EKOenergy label, a third-party certification which guarantees that the renewable energy comes from installations that cause minimal possible damage to nature was obtained.

International Renewable Energy Certificate (I-REC) is a green power certificate that allows you to purchase the environmental value of electricity derived from renewable energy (solar, hydropower, wind, biomass) as 1MWh = 1REC. It is a ‘power supply tracking system’ that allows you to know when, where, and how electricity is generated, and is a highly reliable system recognized by international environmental initiatives such as RE100 and SBTi.

GBP leverages our extensive network both inside and outside of Thailand and has a track record of supplying over 1 billion KWh globally.

On the other hand, the EKOenergy label is an international environmental label certification system in which a third party certifies that energy is environmentally friendly and renewable. The power plant itself is certified to have no negative impact on biodiversity or climate change, and for every 1MWh label purchased by a beneficiary, 10 Euro cents are invested in the climate fund. GBP is the EKOenergy certified provider in Thailand.

Furthermore, the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is the world’s first carbon border adjustment mechanism, and is currently limited to six target categories: cement, fertilizer, electricity, steel, aluminum, and hydrogen. The EU Commission is considering expanding the scope of CBAM to materials and products. The impact on Japanese and Thai companies is expected to increase in the future, and companies exporting to the EU should pay close attention to future trends and take thorough measures in advance, which may lead to business opportunities.
