Issuance of International Renewable Energy Certificate (I-REC) and EKOenergy Label

Background

As corporate decarbonization and sustainability initiatives continue to expand, companies are increasingly looking beyond offices and factories to reduce the environmental impact of business events, seminars, and other corporate activities.

For this project, our client sought to demonstrate the use of renewable electricity for a business seminar and networking event held in Bangkok.

Green & Blue Planet Solutions (GBP) supported the client by arranging the renewable energy attributes corresponding to the electricity consumed at the event. This included the procurement and redemption of an International Renewable Energy Certificate (I-REC), together with the use of the EKOenergy label to demonstrate that the renewable electricity also met additional sustainability criteria.

Through this approach, the client was able to substantiate its renewable electricity use for the event in a transparent and credible manner

Our Approach

GBP first reviewed the electricity consumption associated with the event and the client’s sustainability objectives in order to determine the appropriate renewable energy attributes required.

For this project, we secured and redeemed 1 MWh of I-REC corresponding to the electricity consumed during the event. By redeeming the certificate against the specific electricity use, the renewable energy attribute was allocated to the event and could no longer be claimed for another purpose.

In addition, GBP supported the sourcing of renewable electricity meeting the EKOenergy criteria, enabling the client to go beyond renewable electricity consumption alone and incorporate an additional sustainability dimension into its energy claim.

Upon completion of the process, an I-REC Redemption Statement and an EKOenergy certificate were issued, providing clear documentary evidence of the renewable electricity used for the event.

In this project, the combination of I-REC and EKOenergy enabled the client to demonstrate both the renewable origin of the electricity used for the event and the additional sustainability credentials associated with that electricity.

The resulting I-REC Redemption Statement and EKOenergy certificate provided independent and transparent evidence that could be used in sustainability communications with event participants, business partners, and other stakeholders.

GBP supports renewable electricity procurement not only for annual electricity consumption at offices and manufacturing facilities, but also for specific activities such as seminars, conferences, exhibitions, and corporate events, providing practical solutions tailored to each client’s sustainability objectives.
