Renewable Energy Power Plant Development, Registration under the I-REC(E) Mechanism, and Trading of International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-REC(E))

The increasing impacts of climate change in Thailand and globally—such as droughts, floods, and other natural disasters—have underscored the urgent need for collective action. Electricity consumption is a major focus, as it is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions. In Thailand, electricity generation still relies heavily on fossil fuels, particularly coal and natural gas, making electricity use both essential for economic development and a significant contributor to environmental impacts.

In response to these challenges, industrial sectors and business organizations are increasingly prioritizing the use of clean, low-carbon energy to support sustainable business operations, reduce environmental impacts, and promote the development and adoption of renewable energy at both the organizational and national levels.

Green and Blue Planet Solutions Co., Ltd. (GBP), supported by a team of experienced professionals with in-depth knowledge of the regulations, requirements, and complex operational processes of the International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-REC(E)) market mechanism, provides comprehensive consulting and end-to-end services for the development of renewable energy projects and the trading of I-REC(E). Our services are designed to align with corporate environmental and sustainability strategies. GBP is committed to delivering integrated solutions for both renewable energy producers and electricity consumers seeking to adopt renewable energy, enabling businesses to actively participate in greenhouse gas emission reduction while creating long-term financial value in a sustainable manner.

How I-REC(E) Works

International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-REC(E)) are tradable renewable energy certificates that are verified and certified under the I-REC(E) standard. This international mechanism is designed to verify and track the origin of electricity generated from renewable energy sources. In general, electricity produced from renewable sources—such as solar, wind, biomass, biogas, hydropower, and geothermal energy—is issued with Environmental or Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs). These certificates enable electricity consumers to credibly and transparently claim the use of renewable electricity in accordance with internationally recognized standards.

I-REC(E) is one type of EAC that functions as a tracking and verification system for renewable electricity. Under this mechanism, for every one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity generated from renewable energy, one I-REC(E) is issued. This system enhances transparency and credibility in renewable energy claims by ensuring that each unit of renewable electricity is accurately tracked and verified.

Unbundled RECs: I-REC(E) can be traded separately from the physical electricity supply, a model known as "Unbundled RECs." This allows electricity consumers—even those who do not directly receive renewable electricity through the grid—to support renewable energy generation and demonstrate their environmental and sustainability commitments. For example, I-REC(E) can be used to substantiate renewable energy claims for RE100 members, report Scope 2 greenhouse gas emission reductions in corporate sustainability reports, and support disclosures under frameworks such as the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) and the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).

What Is Our Service

Green and Blue Planet Solutions Co., Ltd. (GBP) is the first organization in Thailand officially approved by the I-REC Registry to act as both a Registrant and a Participant. This enables GBP to develop and register renewable power generation projects and to issue I-REC(E) certificates in a correct, transparent, and internationally recognized manner.

In addition, GBP provides end-to-end services for the trading, transfer, and retirement (redemption) of I-REC(E) renewable energy certificates. Our comprehensive services allow both renewable energy producers and electricity consumers to conveniently, efficiently, and confidently access renewable energy claims at every stage of the process.

For Renewable Energy Power Producers

No account opening required

No need to open an account directly with the I-REC Registry.

No annual registry fees

No annual registry fees to bear.

Fully traceable certificates

Receipt of I-REC(E) certificates that are fully traceable to verified renewable power generation sources.

The I-REC(E) certificates provided are internationally recognized and can be confidently used to demonstrate renewable energy usage to business partners and investors, as well as to support corporate environmental and sustainability reporting.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: What is the difference between Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) and Carbon Offsets?

A: : I-REC(E) and Carbon Credits are environmental instruments with different purposes and units of measurement. I-REC(E) is used to certify and claim the use of electricity generated from renewable energy sources. It is measured in megawatt-hours (MWh). Holding I-REC(E) allows organizations to credibly claim renewable electricity consumption and indirectly supports increased investment in renewable power generation. Carbon Credits are used to reduce or offset greenhouse gas emissions and are measured in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂e). They are suitable for organizations seeking to manage or compensate for their greenhouse gas emissions.

Q: How to ensure that there is no double counting?

A: The I-REC(E) system is designed with strict safeguards to prevent double counting through internationally recognized verification processes:

  • All renewable power plants must undergo registration (Production Device Registration) and verification by an authorized Issuer.
  • The Issuer ensures that the power plant is not participating in other standards or mechanisms that could result in double counting.
  • Certificate issuance is based on verified, actual electricity generation data for each period and is recorded within the I-REC tracking system.

These measures ensure that every I-REC(E) has a clear origin, is fully traceable, and is not double counted.

Q: Can organizations use I-REC(E) if they are unable to directly consume renewable electricity?

A: Yes. I-REC(E) can be purchased separately from physical electricity supply, a model known as Unbundled RECs. This allows organizations to support renewable energy generation and claim the use of renewable electricity, even if they are not yet able to directly source renewable power through the grid.
